Specifically, BFT as epistemology names Black women as agents of knowledge, whose lived experiences and dialogue function as meaning-making devices. From Feb. 20-22, students from multiple universities around the country gathered to celebrate being black.

Also, fear of making mistakes, competition amongst other non-black faculty, and having to work extra hard to be two steps ahead or better than the next person. If we claim to support black lives and rights, we must also support equal treatment of all other marginalized groups. That includes the LGBTQ+ community, all racial minorities, women, indigenous and native peoples, immigrants seeking better lives, those with mental health issues and disabilities and more. One of my personal heroes, Ms. Angela Davis, who was a key member of the Black Panther Party of the Civil Rights Movement, was present.

In high school, I had always been told that I spoke too ‘white’ by my peers, and when I came to my current university — a school with a much more diverse student body — I was told the same. I was told I seemed pretentious because of my academic habits, vocabulary and the way I chose to dress. It seemed that no matter how I did my hair, changed my diction or hid my taste in music, I would never fit this box that was created by others for me.

Many protests, walk-outs, and demands have been made to an administration that has overlooked these incidents when determining immediate and urgent issues the university needed to resolve. Senior Diamond Alexander attended Park University for his first two and a half years of college, where he founded the university’s Black Student Union and became the treasurer of the group. I highlighted emergent patterns related to participants’ collective standpoint and interconnectedness in student affairs. Many of these institutions pride themselves in their increasing diversity rates but do nothing to accommodate these smaller communities within their campus. By uplifting minority communities on college campuses and making an effort to prioritize their voices, students will holistically do better and feel valued. In any institution’s efforts to promote students using their voice, it is also important for colleges and universities to encourage civic engagement. PWIs must not forget their Black and Brown student populations.

Your beauty is defined by what you think about yourself. It doesn’t matter what they say unless you make it matter. I feel like guys don’t like me even though I’m pretty, and I don’t know what to do to make a guy like me without coming off too much. I see other girls get attention from jwed.com blog guys all the time without even trying. I probably sounds shallow but like oh well because college is lonely as fuck and having a bf would be nice. Another essential and overarching component of BFT is the concept of intersectionality (Combahee River Collective,1986; Crenshaw,1989).

The standard of beauty in America has never been meant to include members of the African American community. In a world where your people are frequently portrayed as drug dealers, gang members, or harmful and dangerous, it can be easy to forget the amount of beauty and strength that is present in a black woman’s soul. Now, there are many positive, female, black influences in the media, but when attending a PWI, some black girls just don’t feel pretty. The white boys don’t like you because you’re too dark for their taste and, when they do like you, they say things like, “I’ve always wanted to try a black girl.”, “Wanna be my dark chocolate? ”, or just straight up, “You’re pretty…..for a black girl.” Saying undermining things like this aren’t compliments and if anyone tries to say any of these things to you, politely walk away because you’re too good for that, sis. On top of all that, the black guys, who you’d feel like would want to be our allies because they get treated with the same amount of disrespect as we do and sometimes things much worse, act the same as the white boys.
